This is a question I get asked all the time. The quick answer is from day 1 with your puppy. The next question is usually how do I do it, well following my strategy you will have your new puppy toilet trained outside within a week. The reason why this strategy sometimes fails isn’t because the strategy is flawed but because the owner hasn’t been consistent in following it. So, what is this amazing magic strategy?
You crate train your puppy from day one and when you’re not watching them they’re in the crate. At night time they sleep in the crate with the door closed and you get up through the night to let them out for the toilet. during the day you take them outside :
- EVERY HOUR, ON THE HOUR
- AFTER SLEEP
- AFTER WATER
- AFTER FOOD
When they do the toilet outside you praise and reward them using their kibble as well as physical touch as positive reinforcement.
So as you can see it’s no magic strategy, just consistency from you to teach them.
